laptop down!

my laptop is the broke.
anyone else have this problem with a vista machine?
all the sudden, the screen would go black. crl+alt+del was no use. it's done this before and usually would have to do a hard shutdown by removing the battery. it'd boot back up just fine. although, vista doesn't run scandisk automatically upon reboot and i didn't understand the options it woudl give me, so i always had it boot back up as normal.

well, the night before last, it did this and on the reboot-i got a black screen, a white arrow cursor and an error message about my login screen. and that's it.
can't even remember what the error message said exactly. it was late and i was tired.
the following morning when i tried again, it was just a black screen. 8^(
help! help! not my poor laptop! little wednesday is too young to die!
(fyi: my laptop is named wednesday 'cause it's cute and black. i have an addams family naming scheme on my electronics. my ipod is "thing", while my external hard drive is "lurch".)
